Abstract

The way aviation has developed its safety culture is discussed, considering specific areas such as checklists, standard operating procedures, human factors (including communication difficulties and the effect of fatigue) and training. Several aircraft accidents are discussed. The relevance of the aviation experience to healthcare is explored.
