This is an interactive three-day course to provide surgeons with the essential theoretical knowledge and practical experience of basic level laparoscopic surgery. The course will provide a broad introduction to laparoscopic surgery and the key procedures. You will have the chance to learn and practice a number of laparoscopic techniques under the instruction of vastly experienced tutors.

Course overview

The course aims to:

  • Provide surgical trainees with the technical skills required to perform the most common laparoscopic general surgical operations
  • Provide insight into the theoretical principles of safe laparoscopic practice
  • Disseminate examples of good practice in laparoscopic surgery
  • The certificate of successful completion is issued by the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Course content

This will be an intensive course with plenty of opportunity to practice skills in the laboratory, using bench-top models specifically designed for the course.

The course will cover:

Day 1

  • Instrumentation and Access
  • Manipulation and Dissection

Day 2

  • Laparoscopic Suturing and knotting
  • Diagnostic laparoscopy
  • Laparoscopic appendectomy
  • Repair of a perforated ulcer

Day 3

  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy
  • Laparoscopic Continuous suturing

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for CT1-2, ST3-4 and SAS equivalents. The course is aimed at those working in general abdominal surgery, colorectal surgery, urology and gynaecology. Participants should have an ongoing commitment to a career in laparoscopic procedures and be in a post where regular exposure to supervised laparoscopic surgery is available to cement and enhance the basic skills learned on the course.
